How to Do a Couple’s Photo Shoot

The Intention

So you want to do a couple’s photoshoot - that’s awesome! Is the photoshoot just for fun or are you celebrating/memorializing a special occasion or milestone? Are you planning to keep it simple or do you have an elaborate artistic vision/concept? Whatever it is, make sure to communicate it to your photographer!

The Location

The location you choose largely depends on your intention. Perhaps you’d like to shoot somewhere that holds a significant meaning to you and your partner, or you’d just like to shoot somewhere scenic and beautiful. Or both! You can’t go wrong either way.

The Outfits

COORDINATE!!! Your outfits do not have to match but they should complement each other in terms of color and style. For instance, if you are wearing something that’s formal, then so should your partner. The only exception to this would be if you have a specific and intentional concept that you’d like to illustrate with juxtaposing styles. Tip: Use Adobe’s Color Wheel (free online) to help with color coordination!

The Poses

Don’t think too hard about this. Your photographer will guide you through the shoot (if your photographer is me, anyway). Plus, the best poses are the ones in between the poses - the natural, candid moments. Simply do what feels comfortable for you and your partner. Nonetheless, if you’d like to come prepared with specific poses in mind, looking up reference photos and practicing in the mirror could help a lot!

Additional Tips

  • Come to your session with a positive, loving attitude (i.e. DON’T fight before your shoot, please<3).

  • Be patient and reassuring towards your partner before and during the shoot.

  • Treat your photoshoot as a date! It’ll make the whole process more fun and you’ll be more likely to be comfortable in front of the camera.
